Introduction to Carving Faces

Duration:

6-8 hours

Class Size:

Max 8 persons

Description:

    This hands-on class will introduce the tools and techniques of carving faces.  Students will work in basswood and complete or substantially complete a project in class.

You will Learn:  

  • Materials selection

  • Tool selection and handling

  • Sharpening techniques

  • Layout and methods of approach (Roughing out, refining, adding detail, and finishing)

Pre-requisites:

             None

Tools/Materials:

    Materials will be provided. Tools are available but you are encouraged to bring your own if you have them.

Introduction to Bark Carving

Duration:

6-8 hours

Class Size:

Max 8 persons

Description:

    This hands-on class will introduce participants to the fascinating art of carving bark.  Bark carving is often preferred by those who enjoy carving but find it difficult to manage harder media (basswood, tupelo, etc.)

You will Learn:  

  • How to select good bark

  • Tool selection and handling

  • Sharpening techniques

  • Layout and methods of approach (Roughing out, refining, adding detail, and finishing)

Pre-requisites:

             Introduction to Face Carving or permission from the instructor.  Permission will be granted to anyone having related experience.

Tools/Materials:

    Materials will be provided. Tools are available but you are encouraged to bring your own if you have them.

Introduction to Relief Carving

Duration:

6-8 hours

Class Size:

Max 8 persons

Description:

    This hands-on class introduces participants to the tools, techniques, and methods of Relief carving.  That is, carving  done on a flat surface where wood is removed to expose the desired object.

You will Learn:  

  • How to select good materials

  • Tool selection and handling

  • Sharpening techniques

  • Layout and methods of approach (Roughing out, refining, adding detail, and finishing)

Introduction to Carving in to Round

Duration:

12-16 hours

Class Size:

Max 8 persons

Class Size:  8 maximum

Description:

   This hands-on class will introduce participants to the tools, techniques, and methods of carving 3-dimensional objects (caving in the round).  Through one or more exercises students will learn and practice the skills needed to tackle larger and more elaborate projects.

You will Learn:

  • How to select good materials

  • Tool selection and handling

  • Sharpening techniques

  • Layout and methods of approach (Roughing out, refining, adding detail, and finishing)
